RBI: 98.41% of ₹2000 Notes Returned; Only ₹5,669 Crore Remain in Circulation

  • RBI announced 98.41% of ₹2000 banknotes withdrawn from circulation have been returned.
  • The withdrawal was announced on May 19, 2023, with ₹3.56 lakh crore in circulation then.
  • As of December 31, 2025, only ₹5,669 crore worth of ₹2000 notes remain in circulation.
  • Facilities for deposit/exchange were available at bank branches until October 7, 2023, and now at RBI's 19 Issue Offices.
  • Public can also send notes via India Post to RBI Issue Offices; notes remain legal tender.

Why It Matters: Majority of ₹2000 notes returned to RBI, with only a small fraction still in circulation.
