Barapullah Phase-3 Delayed Again, Cost Jumps by ₹374 Crore; New 2027 Deadline

  • The Barapullah Phase-3 project, connecting Sarai Kale Khan to Mayur Vihar, now has a completion deadline of 2027, extending the wait for East-South Delhi connectivity.
  • The Public Works Department (PWD) attributes delays and cost increases to factors beyond its control, such as land acquisition and shifting high-tension lines.
  • The project, under construction since 2015 with an initial 2017 deadline, has seen its cost escalate by ₹374.40 crore, from ₹1,260.63 crore to ₹1,653.03 crore.
  • An arbitration award of ₹120 crore in favor of the contractor, later increased to ₹175 crore by the High Court, contributed to the cost overrun.
  • The Delhi government has directed PWD to prepare a new proposal for cabinet approval and will form a project monitoring committee to prevent further delays and cost escalations.

Why It Matters: Barapullah Phase-3 faces further delays and a ₹374 crore cost increase, pushing completion to 2027.
