FSSAI Flags Widespread Gaps in Food Labeling Claims; Study Reveals One-Third Fall Short

  • FSSAI has flagged numerous instances of misleading health and nutrition claims on packaged foods, highlighting a growing gap between label messaging and regulatory standards.
  • A LabelBlind Solutions study found 33.6% of 5,058 claims across 586 packaged food products were non-compliant or lacked adequate substantiation.
  • Everyday staples like honey (80%), ghee (65.5%), tea (54.3%), and edible oils (52.9%) showed the highest non-compliance rates for health claims.
  • Newer categories such as plant-based beverages (29%), ready-to-eat meals (28.6%), and packaged snacks (27.3%) also showed significant non-compliance.
  • The findings emphasize the need for companies to integrate compliance checks earlier in product development to avoid enforcement actions and reputational risks.
