Indian Railways Doubles High-Speed Tracks in 11 Years, Targets Bullet Train Speeds

  • Indian Railways has more than doubled its high-speed track network, growing from 31,445 km in 2014 to over 84,244 km today.
  • 80% of the total railway network is now high-speed, up from 40% in 2014, significantly reducing travel time and enhancing safety.
  • Railways is aggressively replacing old tracks, with 6,851 km renewed in FY 2024-25 and targets of 7,500 km for FY 2025-26 and 7,900 km for FY 2026-27.
  • Approximately 15,000 km of fencing has been installed along tracks, especially in high-speed sections, to prevent animal collisions and encroachments.
  • Advanced technology, including 7,161 thick web switches and 1,704 weldable CMS crossings, is being implemented to improve track strength and ride quality.
