CERN's LHC Discovers 'Proton's Big Brother': Heaviest Particle Yet
•Scientists at CERN, using the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), discovered a new sub-atomic particle named 'Xi-cc-plus'.
•This particle is four times heavier than a proton and is a 'heavier version of the proton', part of the 'baryon' family.
•Unlike a proton with two 'up' quarks, Xi-cc-plus contains two heavy 'charm' quarks, making it significantly heavier.
•The discovery will help scientists better understand the 'strong nuclear force' that binds atomic nuclei.
•The particle exists for only a millionth of a millionth of a second, detected through its decay products, a feat enabled by the LHCb detector's 2023 upgrade.
