Doctors Face Rising Violence: MPs Demand Action as Attacks Go Unreported
•Doctors in India, revered as gods, are increasingly targeted by angry relatives following patient deaths, leading to assaults and hospital vandalism.
•A national study revealed 7.9% of doctors faced violence/abuse last year, with 3.9% experiencing physical assaults and damage to property.
•Alarmingly, nearly 48% of these incidents go unreported due to doctors' declining trust in the administrative system.
•BJP MP Lakshmikant Vajpayee highlighted incidents in West Bengal, Maharashtra, Bihar, UP, and Delhi, noting the problem's spread beyond metros.
•He proposed state-level appeal committees led by retired High Court judges and district-level Doctor-Patient Security Coordination Committees to ensure timely justice and doctor safety.
