•Ministry of Defence approved Rs 2,182 crore deal with Russia's JSC Rosoboronexport for Surface-to-Air Vertical Launch Shtil missiles for the Indian Navy.
•Shtil-1 is a medium-range naval air defence system, capable of engaging 12 targets simultaneously and providing all-round protection.
•It boasts an operational range of 3.5-50 km, altitude of 5m-15km, and can target objects moving up to 830 meters/second.
•These missiles will augment stock on Shivalik-class and Talwar-class frigates, strengthening layered air defence against threats from China and Pakistan.
•India is also inducting indigenous VL-SRSAM for short-range defence, complementing Shtil's medium-range capabilities.
