Aruna Shanbaug: 42 Years in PVS, Her Euthanasia Case Shaped India's Right to Die Law
•
Aruna Shanbaug, a Mumbai nurse, was brutally attacked in 1973, leaving her in a Permanent Vegetative State (PVS) for 42 years.
•
Journalist Pinki Virani filed a 2009 petition for Aruna's euthanasia, which was opposed by the hospital nurses who cared for her.
•
The Supreme Court rejected Aruna's euthanasia plea in 2011 but legally recognized Passive Euthanasia in India.
•
Passive Euthanasia allows removal of life support for incurable patients with court permission, a landmark decision influenced by Aruna's case.
•
Aruna Shanbaug passed away in 2015; her attacker, Sohanlal Valmiki, served only 7 years for attempted murder and theft.
