• Former state minister and prominent CPIM leader Upendra Kisku passed away at 83 in a Bankura nursing home on Wednesday night due to a brain hemorrhage.
• He was a key figure in the 'Kendupata movement' and served as MLA from Raipur assembly constituency for eight consecutive terms starting 1977.
• Kisku held the portfolio of Minister for Backward Classes Welfare from 1982 to 2006.
• He was a primary organizer of the 'Adivasi Adhikar Mancha' and helped establish many government schools and tribal cooperatives in Jangalmahal.
• Despite retiring from parliamentary politics after 2016, he remained actively connected with CPIM until his last day.
