NRI in Australia Duped of Rs 48 Lakh in 'Digital Arrest' Cyber Fraud

  • An Ahmedabad-origin NRI living in Sydney, Australia, was swindled out of Rs 48 lakh through a 'digital arrest' cyber fraud.
  • Fraudsters impersonated Mumbai Crime Branch officers, threatening the victim with arrest for alleged suspicious transactions linked to 'anti-national activities'.
  • The victim was kept under constant video surveillance, forced to buy a new phone, and had his devices remotely accessed.
  • AUD 25,000 (Rs 14 lakh) was withdrawn from his Australian bank account, and Rs 34 lakh from his Axis Bank fixed deposit in Naranpura, Ahmedabad.
  • Investigations are underway by the Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Department and Australian Cyber Security Department; public urged to be cautious.
