Tarique Rahman Sworn In as Bangladesh PM After 17 Years in Exile

  • Tarique Rahman took oath as Bangladesh's Prime Minister on February 17, marking a political comeback after 17 years of self-exile in London.
  • His Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a sweeping victory with 209 out of 297 seats in the 13th parliamentary elections.
  • The oath ceremony was held at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad, a departure from the traditional venue, Bangabhaban.
  • Rahman returned to Bangladesh in December last year after leaving in 2008 for medical reasons, facing a personal tragedy with his mother Khaleda Zia's passing shortly after.
  • He was acquitted of corruption and criminal charges, which he consistently denied as politically motivated, during the interim administration.
