US iPhone imports to India get cheaper: Duty-free limit raised to Rs 75,000

  • India's updated Customs Rules for 2026, effective February 2, 2026, raise the duty-free allowance for air/sea travelers to Rs 75,000, up from Rs 50,000.
  • This higher limit benefits Indian residents, NRIs, and people of Indian origin, making it cheaper to bring personal items like iPhones from abroad.
  • One laptop or notebook can now be brought in duty-free, separate from the Rs 75,000 allowance, for travelers aged 18 and above.
  • Customs duty on items exceeding Rs 75,000 has been reduced to 10% (plus 10% social welfare surcharge), down from the previous 20% basic duty.
  • Travelers are advised to keep purchase bills, avoid multiple sealed items, and declare goods honestly to ensure a smooth customs process.

Why It Matters: New customs rules make bringing iPhones and other gadgets from abroad significantly cheaper and easier.
