350-Million-Year-Old 'Smiling' Fossil Stuns Experts on Holy Island
•
A 350-million-year-old fossil resembling smiling teeth was found on Holy Island, England.
•
Discovered by Christine Clark of the British Geological Survey (BGS), it's a crinoid columnal, an ancient marine animal.
•
Crinoids, also known as 'sea lilies', first appeared 500 million years ago and are among Earth's oldest complex animals.
•
The unique 'mouth-like' shape formed as the crinoid's flexible stem split lengthwise and twisted over millions of years.
•
Locally, these fossils are called 'Cuddy's Beads' or 'St Cuthbert's beads', with historical religious significance.
