Mirage 4000: Rafale's Unsung Predecessor That Challenged F-35 But Found No Buyers
•Dassault Mirage 4000, a twin-engine heavyweight fighter from the 1980s, was considered comparable to F-15 Eagle and Su-27, and even capable of challenging future F-35s due to its advanced capabilities.
•Developed as a private venture by Dassault, it made its first flight on March 9, 1979, achieving Mach 2 speed on its sixth flight and reaching 50,000 feet in under 4 minutes.
•It featured two Snecma M53 engines, a thrust-to-weight ratio greater than 1, triple fuel capacity of Mirage 2000, composite materials, fly-by-wire controls, glass cockpit, and 11 hardpoints.
•Despite interest from Saudi Arabia, Iran, and India, the project found no buyers; France prioritized the Mirage 2000, and export markets for heavy fighters were limited.
•Only one prototype was built, completing 336 flights before the project was canceled in 1988; its advanced technologies were later incorporated into the successful Rafale.
