US Sub Sinks Iran Frigate: 'Sink Me Now or Sink Me Later,' Says Ex-Navy Captain

•A US submarine sank the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena off Sri Lanka on March 4, 2026, marking the first such torpedo strike since WWII.
•Retired US Navy Captain Brent Sadler defended the strike, citing US national policy to neutralize the Iranian Navy for defensive purposes.
•The IRIS Dena, returning from India's International Fleet Review, was hit by a Mark 48 torpedo, killing at least 87 of 180 crew members.
•Sadler argued the strike was legal under UN Charter Article 51, considering the Dena a 'fair target' once hostilities began.
•Sri Lanka escorted the IRIS Bushehr to harbor, while India allowed IRIS Lavan to dock in Kochi for humanitarian reasons.
