98.44% of Rs 2,000 Notes Returned to RBI; Only Rs 5,551 Crore Remain in Circulation
- •The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that 98.44% of the withdrawn Rs 2,000 banknotes have been returned.
- •The total value of Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation has dropped significantly to Rs 5,551 crore by February 28, 2026, from Rs 3.56 lakh crore on May 19, 2023.
- •RBI initiated the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 denomination banknotes from circulation on May 19, 2023.
- •Exchange facilities are available at 19 RBI Issue Offices since May 19, 2023, with deposit options added from October 9, 2023.
- •Members of the public can also send Rs 2,000 banknotes via India Post to RBI Issue Offices for bank account credit; the notes remain legal tender.
