98.44% of Rs 2,000 Notes Returned to RBI; Only Rs 5,551 Crore Remain in Circulation

•The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that 98.44% of the withdrawn Rs 2,000 banknotes have been returned.
•The total value of Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation has dropped significantly to Rs 5,551 crore by February 28, 2026, from Rs 3.56 lakh crore on May 19, 2023.
•RBI initiated the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 denomination banknotes from circulation on May 19, 2023.
•Exchange facilities are available at 19 RBI Issue Offices since May 19, 2023, with deposit options added from October 9, 2023.
•Members of the public can also send Rs 2,000 banknotes via India Post to RBI Issue Offices for bank account credit; the notes remain legal tender.
