C-Section Births Soar Four-Fold in India Since 2008, Now Over 27% of Deliveries: Govt
•C-section deliveries in India increased over four-fold between 2008-09 and 2024-25, now comprising over 27% of all reported childbirths.
•Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav informed Parliament that C-sections jumped from 12.03 lakh to over 54.35 lakh during this period.
•A 2022 study by Population Research Centre (PRC), Dharwad, attributes the rise to doctors’ clinical decisions, changing patient preferences, and medical factors.
•Government initiatives like 'LaQshya' and training programs ('Daksh', 'Dakshta', 'Skilled Birth Attendant') aim to regulate unnecessary C-sections and promote normal deliveries.
•Despite the rise in surgical deliveries, India has seen a significant decline in Maternal Mortality Ratio and Infant Mortality Rate.
