Groundwater Levels Rise in 73% Wells Post-Monsoon 2025, Recharge Improves: Govt

73% of monitored wells showed a rise in groundwater levels in post-monsoon 2025 compared to the 2015-2024 decadal mean.
•
Total groundwater recharge increased from 432 BCM in 2017 to 448.52 BCM in 2025, as per Central Ground Water Board (CGWB).
•
The proportion of 'safe' assessment units rose to 73.14%, while 'over-exploited' units declined to 10.8%.
•
Despite national improvements, some areas face seasonal groundwater stress due to urbanization, industrialization, and inefficient irrigation.
•
Government initiatives like 'Jal Shakti Abhiyan' and 'Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari' are boosting water conservation efforts nationwide.
