Delhi-NCR to Ban Petrol-Diesel Cars by 2030? Experts Propose Electric Revolution

• A high-level expert committee, chaired by Professor Ashok Jhunjhunwala of IIT Madras, proposes phasing out petrol and diesel vehicles in Delhi-NCR by 2030.
• The plan suggests immediate removal of BS-I, BS-II, and BS-III vehicles, with BS-IV vehicles to be removed within five years.
• BS-VI two-wheelers are targeted for removal by 2035 and cars by 2040 to manage the transition for recent purchasers.
• From April 2027, all new commercial two-wheelers and taxis must be 'Zero Tailpipe Emission' (ZTE), extending to light commercial vehicles by April 2028.
• A major proposal suggests only electric cars be allowed for registration in Delhi-NCR from April 2030, alongside a 'Right to Charge' framework and 'Real-World Emission Monitoring'.
