India Boosts Climate Ambition: Cabinet Approves 47% Emissions Cut, 60% Non-Fossil Power by 2035

Union Cabinet approves India’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for 2031–2035, to be submitted to UNFCCC.
•
New targets include a 47% reduction in GDP emissions intensity by 2035 from 2005 levels.
•
India aims for 60% cumulative installed electric power capacity from non-fossil fuels by 2035.
•
Goal to create a carbon sink of 3.5 to 4.0 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent through forest and tree cover by 2035.
•
Updated commitments align with net-zero by 2070 and Viksit Bharat by 2047, building on already achieved previous targets.
