Half of Inspected Aircraft Have Recurring Defects; Air India, IndiGo Top List

  • Nearly half (377 out of 754) of aircraft inspected across Indian airlines since January last year had recurring technical defects, according to government data presented in Lok Sabha.
  • IndiGo, with the largest fleet, had 148 out of 405 planes flagged for repetitive defects.
  • Air India Group (Air India and Air India Express) showed a significantly higher proportion, with 191 out of 267 aircraft (nearly 72%) having recurring issues.
  • Air India stated that the high numbers reflect comprehensive, precautionary inspections, with most identified issues being low-priority (Category D) and not safety risks.
  • The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has increased regulatory oversight, conducting thousands of inspections and expanding its technical manpower from 637 to 1,063 posts.
