Silent Epidemic: Over One-Third of Indian Adults Suffer From Fatty Liver Disease
•
Nearly four in ten Indian adults have metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MASLD), according to a Lancet study.
•
MASLD is driven by obesity, diabetes, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure, not alcohol.
•
The study, based on data from 7,764 participants across 27 Indian cities, found a crude prevalence of 47.8% and an age-adjusted prevalence of 38.9%.
•
Significant liver fibrosis, a precursor to cirrhosis, was found in 6.3% of individuals with MASLD.
•
Authors call for community-based awareness, targeted public health interventions, and screening for early detection and management.
