Chhattisgarh Revives Betel Leaf Cultivation: Research on 47 Varieties Underway
- •Betel leaf cultivation, historically prevalent in Khairagarh-Chhuikhadan-Gandai and Dongargarh, declined over the last 50 years due to weather changes, lack of technical knowledge, and market uncertainties.
- •The Chhattisgarh government established the Betel Leaf Research Center in Chhuikhadan last year to revive cultivation and train farmers in scientific methods, with Dr. Bhagwat Saran Asarti as in-charge.
- •The center is gathering and training people from the Chaurasia and Mahobia communities, who traditionally cultivated betel leaf, and sending farmers on study tours to learn modern techniques.
- •Currently, betel leaf cultivation has been re-established in 10 bareja (sheds) in Chhuikhadan, showcasing prominent varieties like Bilhori Paan, Bangla Paan, Meetha Paan, Kapoori Paan, and Desi Paan.
- •Research is ongoing on 47 types of betel leaves sourced from West Bengal, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh to identify varieties best suited for specific qualities and uses, also involving women's groups for economic empowerment.
Why It Matters: Chhattisgarh is reviving its traditional betel leaf cultivation through research, training, and community involvement.
