•Cochin Shipyard Limited and South Korea's HD Hyundai Group are in advanced talks for a $500-million shipbuilding joint venture in Kochi.
•This marks the first direct investment by a global shipbuilding major in India's core shipbuilding infrastructure.
•The partnership, with equal participation, aims to establish India as a serious shipbuilding nation, leveraging Hyundai's expertise and CSL's infrastructure.
•An initial investment of Rs 4,500-5,000 crore is planned for a ship block fabrication facility near CSL's existing yard, creating 2,000 direct jobs.
•The venture will enable construction of larger, more sophisticated vessels like cargo ships, container vessels, and tankers, with an agreement expected in H2 2026.
