Cabinet Approves India's First Road-Cum-Rail Tunnel Under Brahmaputra River
•Union Cabinet greenlights Rs 18,662 crore project for India's first road-cum-rail tunnel under the Brahmaputra River in Assam.
•The project includes a four-lane access-controlled greenfield corridor between Gohpur and Numaligarh, featuring a 15.79 km road-cum-rail tunnel.
•This will be India's first underwater road-cum-rail tunnel and the second globally, significantly reducing travel time from 6 hours to less than 1 hour.
•The tunnel will enhance connectivity for Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and other northeastern states, boosting freight movement and reducing logistics costs.
•The project will generate approximately 80 lakh person-days of direct and indirect employment, fostering regional economic growth and development.
