Urologist Warns: Toilet Paper Can Cause UTIs, Especially in Women
- •Dr. Prakash Chandra Shetty, Associate Director of Urology at Dr. L. H. Hiranandani Hospital, highlights that poor quality or scented toilet paper can lead to UTIs.
- •Recycled toilet paper often contains bleaching agents and chemicals that irritate delicate skin, allowing bacteria like E. coli to enter and cause infections.
- •Rough, thin, or easily tearing toilet paper can leave fragments that trap moisture and bacteria, increasing infection risk, particularly for those with diabetes, menopausal changes, or weakened immunity.
- •Incorrect wiping methods, such as rubbing too hard, can cause micro-abrasions, while colored and scented toilet paper can disrupt vaginal pH balance.
- •To prevent UTIs, use soft, unscented, uncolored toilet paper (virgin pulp or bamboo is recommended) and always wipe from front to back without excessive rubbing.
Why It Matters: Poor quality, scented, or rough toilet paper and incorrect wiping can significantly increase UTI risk.
