Ghoramara Island Faces Disappearance by 2042: NGT Issues Urgent Directive to Save Sundarbans
•
National Green Tribunal (NGT) issues urgent directive to save Ghoramara Island in Sundarbans from erosion.
•
A high-level joint committee to be formed to prevent erosion and conserve mangrove forests, submitting a report within three months.
•
Island's erosion is attributed to its geomorphological features, global warming, cyclones, and rising sea levels.
•
Committee will include DG (Forest) of Bhubaneswar Regional Office and State's CCF, tasked with outlining prevention methods, costs, and timelines.
•
Ghoramara Island's area shrunk from 8.59 sq km in 1969 to 3.83 sq km by 2019, with fears of complete disappearance by 2042.
