458 Poor Prisoners Benefit from Centre's Support Scheme: Govt Informs RS
•The Centre's 'Support to Poor Prisoners' scheme has benefited 458 inmates so far, as informed by the government in Rajya Sabha.
•Launched in 2023, the scheme provides financial assistance to prisoners unable to pay fines or secure bail due to financial constraints.
•Revised guidelines and a standard operating procedure were shared with states and UTs on December 2, 2025, to enhance implementation.
•Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar highlighted legal reforms like the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita to reduce trial delays.
•Despite a marginal decline, undertrials still constitute about 74% of India's prison population in 2023, with states responsible for prison infrastructure.
