E20 Petrol with RON 95 Mandated Nationwide from April 1, 2026

• Government mandates sale of E20 petrol with a minimum Research Octane Number (RON) of 95 across all states and Union Territories from April 1, 2026.
• The oil ministry issued a notification on February 17, directing oil companies to sell ethanol-blended motor spirit with up to 20 percent ethanol.
• Ethanol, made from sugarcane, maize, or grain, is renewable, domestically produced, and burns cleaner, helping cut oil imports and reduce emissions.
• Most vehicles manufactured in India from 2023-2025 are designed for E20; older vehicles might experience a slight drop in mileage (3-7%) and potential wear on rubber/plastic components.
• India saved over Rs 1.40 lakh crore in foreign exchange since 2014-15 through petrol substitution, with the government advancing the 20% blending target to 2025-26.
