Kolkata Metro Blue Line gets BESS: No more power cut fears, trains to run smoothly

•Kolkata Metro launches Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Central Metro Station on the Blue Line.
•The new system acts as backup power to pull metro trains from mid-tunnel during sudden power outages or grid failures.
•Comprises inverters and Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) batteries, capable of supplying stored power.
•4 MW BESS with 6.4 MWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries, developed under National Program on ACC Battery Storage.
•Ensures trains reach next station at 55 km/h, powers tunnel ventilation, reduces carbon footprint, and lowers energy bills.
