India's Sugar Production Soars 10.5% to 262.14 Lakh Tons; MSP Hike Urged
•India's sugar production increased by 10.5% to 262.14 lakh tons by mid-March, up from 237.24 lakh tons last year, according to ISMA.
•Currently, 157 factories are operational nationwide, a decrease from 182 mills operating at the same time last year.
•Uttar Pradesh produced 81.3 lakh tons, while Maharashtra and Karnataka saw significant increases to 98.46 lakh tons and 46.04 lakh tons, respectively.
•The industry is pressing for an upward revision of the Minimum Selling Price (MSP) due to rising production costs and lagging ex-mill realizations, leading to cash-flow pressures.
•Maharashtra's cane payment arrears reached Rs 4,898 crore by February 2026, highlighting the urgent need for MSP revision to ensure mill viability and timely farmer payments.
